Gurk II, the 8-bit RPG is the sequel to Gurk, released on the Android Market by Larva Labs on May 13th, 2011. It keeps the series' one-handed, tile-based design and adds quests, NPCs, music, potions and ships.

The first game was free; Gurk II sold for $0.99. Larva Labs' store copy joked that "your $1 couldn't possibly go any further now, or back in the day." The download is around 1.0 MB.

Features#

It added the following features not present in Gurk:

  • Quests and NPCs: a quest log and townspeople to talk to
  • Music and sound: a full MIDI soundtrack (composed in the 1990s and repurposed for the game) plus compressed sound effects
  • Ships, chartered to reach new stretches of the map
  • Potions, summoned monsters, and area-of-effect spells
  • Stat rolling at character creation
  • The Larvatron 86 heads-up display, used across the rest of the series

Story#

Four dragons are scattered across the land, and behind them stands the daemon Daako. Your party starts in the town of Barrow Keep, picks up quests against orc raiders and a goblin king, and works outward through Auldenham and Wauldish Castle, chartering ships to reach the Farren Marsh and the merfolk kingdom as Daako's return becomes clear.

Availability#

Gurk II has been delisted from both Google Play and the App Store. Only Gurk III remains purchasable, on iOS.
