EBURP (Eight-Bit Universal Role Playing) is the engine Larva Labs wrote for Gurk III. It was released about 3 months after the game launched.
The last update was published on June 17th, 2014.
It's unknown if any games have ever been published that use it.
Technical Specifications#
The engine is written in CoffeeScript, which compiles to JavaScript, so a game built on it runs in a web browser.
The build tools are made in Java, so a JDK is needed to build from source.
The demo game#
Bundled with the engine is a demo built from content similar to Gurk III.
It includes:
- 10 party members
- 64 creatures
- 113 items
- 85 spells
- 16 explorable maps
- 12 combat backdrops
- 8 quests
The demo is playable at pents90.github.io/eburp.
License#
The README states you may use anything contained within the library, aside from the Gurk name.
"Please don't call your game 'Gurk', that's our little brand! Also, you can use anything that is in this open-source project, but please don't pirate any graphics or music from the Gurk series that is not included here."
